Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project
The City of West Chicago is excited to kick off the Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project! This project will improve safety, accessibility and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment for residents, businesses, and visitors. As part of the Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project, the City will develop a streetscape design along Main Street from Washington Street to Wilson Avenue, and Turner Court from Washington Street to Main Street.

The project will include:
- Safety Upgrades. This could include high-visibility crosswalks, curb extensions to shorten crossing distances and improve visibility, traffic calming elements to slow down vehicles, ADA ramp improvements, upgraded lighting and new pedestrian walking surfaces.
- Infrastructure Enhancements. This will include upsizing water mains, replacing lead service lines, sanitary sewer lining, and stormwater management improvements, which will support future growth and development.
- Streetscape, Placemaking and Aesthetic Improvements. This could include new sidewalks, decorative pavement, wayfinding signage, community identifiers, new street trees, landscaping areas, decorative lighting, seating and other new street furniture to create a more inviting and visually appealing environment that will help support local businesses and restaurants.
This project is funded through the Rebuild Downtowns & Main Streets (RDMS) grant through the State of Illinois. This RDMS project aligns with the City’s long-term vision as outlined in the West Chicago Forward Comprehensive Plan and the Central-Main Street Revitalization Plan Update, both of which prioritize the revitalization of downtown as a thriving, accessible hub. These improvements will strengthen physical and visual connections throughout downtown, linking key community destinations such as the Metra station, Illinois Prairie Path, City Hall, and the West Chicago Public Library.
